SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Citadel’s Sawyer Root has been named the Southern Conference wrestler of the week for all competition from Nov. 28-Dec. 4, the league office announced Wednesday.
The senior went 4-2 this past weekend at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, beating two ranked opponents. Root’s first victory came against No. 12 nationally-ranked Corey Griego of Oregon State, who was seeded third in the tournament. The Saint Cloud, Florida, native took the match with a decision of 4-0 after tallying a takedown, an escape and a point for riding time over the two-time PAC 12 champion. He then took down No. 15 nationally-ranked Jake Woodley of Oklahoma by a final decision of 6-1. His other two wins came against Sage Mosco of American University and Pac-12 placer and NCAA qualifier, Tom Lane of Cal Poly.
Root becomes the first Bulldog to defeat two top-fifteen ranked opponents on the same day. He improves to 12-8 on the year.
Root and the Bulldogs return to the mat for the Reno Tournament of Champions in Reno, Nevada, on Dec. 20.
