SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer junior guard Ross Cummings has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for all contests Jan. 8-14. The award is selected by the league office.
Cummings opened his week with a career-high 36 points and added four rebounds and two assists as the Bears claimed their first SoCon win of the season and snapped a three-game skid, topping Western Carolina 84-80 on Thursday. Cummings was 12-for-19 from the floor (63.2 percent) against the Catamounts, including a 7-for-11 mark (63.6 percent) from 3-point range. He had 21 of his points after halftime and scored seven of Mercer’s final nine points in the contest as the Bears rallied from a five-point deficit at the break.
The Dickson, Tennessee, native followed that performance with a game-high 22 points in Mercer’s 72-68 overtime loss to ETSU on Saturday, again doing most of his damage in the second half with 17 points after intermission. Cummings also brought down four rebounds and hit another four 3-pointers.
