GREENVILLE, N.C. – ETSU’s James Giambalvo, The Citadel’s Jordan Buster and Mercer’s Nick Spear were named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Stopper of the Year preseason watch list on Monday afternoon.
Giambalvo recorded a 3.38 ERA as ETSU’s closer last season while racking up a 3-3 record with six saves in 23 appearances. He had 38 strikeouts and 14 walks, while allowing 14 earned runs through 37.1 innings.
Buster enters his final season ranked 17th on the all-time list for appearances for the Bulldogs. Last season, Buster went 4-4 with a 4.43 ERA and three saves in 23 relief appearances and finished the year with 59 strikeouts over 40.2 innings, including for game with at least five punchouts.
Spear enters his final collegiate season as one of the Southern Conference’s top active pitchers. He leads all active conference pitchers in career opposing batting average (.226), saves (13) and strikeouts per nine innings (12.27) while ranking second with 81 career appearances. The senior logged 38.1 innings over 32 appearances last season and recorded 60 strikeouts and a 3.52 earned run average.
The NCBWA, founded in 1962, presents the Dick Howser Trophy to the nation’s top player. It also selects All-America Teams for all Divisions, a Division I Freshman All-American team, Division I, II and III Players of the Week and Division I, II and III Players of the Year.
