SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Southern Conference coordinator of women’s basketball officials Charlene Curtis has announced her retirement, effective June 30. Curtis served 11 years in the role.

“Charlene has been a dedicated coordinator of officials for the Southern Conference and we will miss working with her,” Southern Conference Commissioner John Iamarino said. “Her knowledge of the rules, ability to train and mentor officials and accountability to our coaches has made her a valuable asset for women’s basketball throughout the Southeast.”

Curtis served two terms on the NCAA Playing Rules Committee and currently serves on the Mechanics Committee. During her tenure on those committees, she has helped usher in the 10-second backcourt rule and the four-quarter format, which included changes to the timeout rules and the ability to advance the ball into the front court in the final minute of a game. She also helped implement the rules and mechanics of the restricted area and the Lower Defensive Box.

Under her supervision, officials who were relatively new to the conference when she assumed the post in 2008 are now working as lead officials on regular-season SoCon games as well as in the league tournament semifinals and championship game. Some of those same officials have also advanced to work NCAA regionals and Final Fours.

A member of the Radford Sports Hall of Fame as both a coach and a player and the Big South Conference Hall of Fame as a coach, Curtis is wrapping up a long and decorated career in which she served as the head coach at Wake Forest, Temple and Radford and was an assistant at Virginia, Georgetown and Connecticut. She was an assistant for the Charlotte Sting of the WNBA and served several stints with USA Basketball.

Curtis, who was also a women’s basketball officials evaluator for the South Atlantic Women's Basketball Officiating (SAWBO) organization, served as a women’s basketball analyst for Fox Sports Net and ESPNU prior to joining the SoCon.

“The last 11 years spent with the SAWBO family have truly been a blessing,” Curtis said. “I am forever grateful and humbled to have been given the opportunity to serve in the ACC, Big South, CAA, and SoCon with the best administrators, coaches, and officials in college athletics.”
