SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its men’s soccer players of the week Tuesday for games played Sept. 3-9. Mercer forward Trevor Martineau and Furman defender Cole McLagan were honored as the league’s offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively.
Mercer remained undefeated for the season as they picked up a pair of wins on the road over UAB and Memphis. The Paladins were also victorious twice last week against Gardner-Webb and Winthrop, with their win over the Eagles giving Doug Allison his 300th career win as a head coach.
Martineau, the reigning offensive player of the week, kept up his impressive pace in Birmingham this weekend by scoring twice and assisting on two other goals to lead the Bears to a perfect weekend. The sophomore standout was responsible for every goal as he notched two goals and an assist against the Blazers and provided the assist on the lone goal in the win over Memphis.
McLagan, a redshirt junior, continued his hot start to the season by scoring three goals from his position in the Paladin defense. In the win over Gardner-Webb, he managed to beat the keeper on twice, with one coming by way of a free-kick. McLagan buried another free-kick in Sunday’s match against Winthrop for his fifth goal in four matches this season.
Both teams will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 11, with the Bears traveling to face the University of South Carolina and Furman hosting UNC Asheville in their home opener. Both games are set to kick off at 7 p.m.
