SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced its SoCon Football Players of the Week presented by GEICO on Monday, for games Oct. 17-19. After its win over then-No. 8 Furman on Saturday, The Citadel claimed two awards, with linebacker Marquis Blount repeating as Defensive Player of the Week and kicker Jacob Godek earning Special Teams Player of the Week honors. Wofford quarterback Joe Newman was named the Offensive Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Joe Newman, Wofford, Sr., QB, Riverdale, Ga.
Playing just three quarters in Wofford’s 59-7 win over Western Carolina on Saturday, Terrier quarterback Joe Newman ran for 104 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 162 yards and two scores, completing seven of his 11 attempts. The 100-yard rushing game was his third of the season and sixth of his career, while the 162 passing yards were a season high as the senior from Riverdale, Georgia, averaged 10.4 yards on 10 carries and 23.1 yards per completion. Newman was one of three Wofford players to rush for at least 100 yards as the Terriers, who have won four straight after an 0-2 start to the season, amassed a season-best 613 yards of total offense.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Marquise Blount, The Citadel, So., LB, Charlotte, N.C.
Citadel linebacker Marquise Blount earned his second straight weekly honor after turning in six tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a crucial forced fumble in the Bulldogs’ 27-10 win over No. 8 Furman on Saturday. The sophomore from Charlotte, North Carolina, made one of the biggest plays of the game in the third quarter when he recorded a 13-yard strip sack that gave The Citadel the ball deep in Furman territory. The Bulldogs ran for a score two plays later to make it a 21-3 contest. Blount was part of a defensive unit that held the Paladins to just 10 points and 216 yards of total offense, both season lows.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jacob Godek, The Citadel, Sr., K, Longwood, Fla.
Kicker Jacob Godek scored nine points for The Citadel in its 27-10 win over No. 8 Furman on Saturday. The senior from Longwood, Florida, was 2-for-2 on field-goal tries, converting from 30 yards and 46 yards on consecutive fourth-quarter possessions as the Bulldogs salted away their first win over a ranked opponent this season. Godek, who was also 3-for-3 on point-after attempts, kicked off six times for an average of 64.7 yards, recording four touchbacks.
