SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Appalachian State’s Sean Carter has been named the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for all competition from Nov. 27 to Dec. 3. The selection is made by the league office.
Carter, a true freshman, picked up a 9-3 decision over Joey Melendez in his first collegiate dual against 18th-ranked North Carolina on Dec. 1. The Babylon, New York, native earned his first collegiate dual win over Melendez, who compiled a 20-4 record last season and is ranked 26th in his weight class. Carter’s win cut the deficit to just five as the Mountaineers rallied back into contention heading into the final bout, but the Tar Heels took the final decision and the dual 19-13. Carter is now 5-4 on the season with a 1-0 record in duals.
The weekly award is the first of Carter’s career.
Appalachian State will hit the mat again on Dec. 13 at home against NC State at 7 p.m.
Also nominated: Rodney Jones (Chattanooga).
