2006 Southern Conference Men’s and Women’s
Basketball Championships

The Southern Conference returns to Charleston, SC, for the 2006 Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships. The tournament begins on Thursday, March 2 and concludes on Sunday, March 5. The men will play all games at the North Charleston Coliseum. The women’s tournament will be played at McAlister Field House on the campus of The Citadel on Thursday, March 2 and Friday, March 3. The semifinals and championship game of the women’s tournament will be at the North Charleston Coliseum.

The 2005 tournament proved to be an exciting one in Chattanooga, TN. Records were broken, two new champions were crowned and rookie coaches captured the spotlight.
MEN:
The Chattanooga Mocs were crowned the Southern Conference Tournament champions for the first time since

1996-97...and did it on their home court. Head coach John Shulman became the first rookie coach to win the championship title since Western Carolina’s Phil Hopkins in 1996. UTC topped UNCG 66-62 in the title game. Chattanooga’s Mindaugas Katelynas earned Most Outstanding Player honors as he averaged 15.7 points and 13.0 rebounds including a tourney-high 21 rebounds in a semifinal win over Appalachian State. The championship game attendance of 7,243 was the largest since 7,100 witnessed the title game in 1978 in Roanoke.

to the championship game as the sixth seed but fell to Chattanooga in the final. In 2005, the Lady Catamounts went one step further, becoming only the second #6 seed in conference history to win the tournament title with a 97-95 double overtime win over Georgia Southern. The tournament saw 16 tournament records broken and two tied, with WCU’s Jennifer Garner setting six of those records. Western Carolina head coach Kellie Harper became the first women’s basketball head coach to win the tournament in her rookie season.
