No. 9 Davidson 4, No. 8 Samford 3

ELON, N.C. – Arie Hefter’s three-set victory over Oliver Reynolds (5-7, 7-5, 7-6 {9-7}) lifted Davidson to a 4-3 come-from behind victory over Samford in the first match of the 2009 Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Championships.  Trailing 3-1 in the match, the No. 9 seed Wildcats got three-set wins in each of the final 3 matches to rally for the win.

 

No. 8 seed Samford (6-16-1) earned the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.  Reynolds and Carl Abalos picked up a 8-4 win for the Bulldogs at No. 2, while all-freshman team honoree Carson Kadi and teammate Richard Walsh also scored an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles. 

 

Abalos defeated Davidson’s Carter Braxton, 6-0, 6-0 on No. 6 singles shortly before Kelwin DeWet picked up Samford’s second singles victory with a 6-2, 7-5 decision over Walker Lyons at No. 2. 

 

Davidson’s (7-16) Calem Gee turned the tide for the Wildcats, as he gave the Wildcats their first point of the match with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Brian DuShock on No. 4 singles.  Eric Noble outlasted Walsh (3-6, 6-3, 7-5) at No. 1 singles, while Scott Myers’ 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 triumph over Kadi at No. 3 singles evened the match at three wins apiece. 

 

With the win Davidson advances to take on top seeded Furman Friday morning at 9:00 a.m.  

 

 

No. 6 College of Charleston 4, No. 11 Chattanooga 0

ELON, N.C. – The College of Charleston men’s tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2009 Men’s Tennis Championships with a 4-0 victory over Chattanooga Thursday afternoon.  The sixth-seeded Cougars earned the doubles point and picked up the first three decisions in singles play to claim the necessary four points to advance.

 

The CofC (10-13) duo of Mickael Trintignac and Mickael Boyer picked up an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles over Chattanooga’s (2-18) Alex Butnarcuic and Dakota Pate.  The Cougars secured the point with an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles as Omer Abramovich and Joe Nicolazzi downed Gordon Rudell and Rick vande Bovenkamp.  The No. 1 singles match did not finish once the doubles point was decided.

 

Nicolazzi recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win over Sam Parfitt at No. 6 singles to push the Cougars ahead 2-0.  Tom Delme gave CofC a 3-0 lead with his 6-1, 6-3 victory over Dakota Pate at No. 4 singles.  Trintignac’s 6-3, 6-3 win over Alex Butnarcuic at No. 3 singles gave the Cougars the win in the match.

 

The singles matches at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 did not finish once the match was decided.

 

College of Charleston will square off against No. 3 seed Wofford in Friday’s quarterfinal which begins at 1:00 p.m.

 

 

No. 7 Appalachian State 4, No. 10 The Citadel 0

ELON, N.C. – The Appalachian State men’s tennis team posted a 4-0 victory over The Citadel in the first round of the 2009 Southern Conference men’s tennis tournament Thursday afternoon.  The Mountaineers captured the doubles point before claiming three straight singles matches to secure the win.

 

The Mountaineers took an early 1-0 lead by virtue of wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.  ASU’s Peter Jacobs and Trent Constance topped Alberto Diaz and Derek Dickey of the Citadel, 8-3 at No. 2 doubles.  Alain Humblet and Phillip Kloc (ASU) also scored an 8-3 win over The Citadel’s Michael Kociecki and Josh Cook by a score of 8-3.

 

Kloc cruised to a straight-set 6-1, 6-1 win over Dickey at No. 5 singles to push the Mountaineers ahead, 2-0 before Humblet notched a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Trip Larkin.  Jacobs’ 6-3, 6-3 win over Alberto Diaz at No. 3 singles secured the win for ASU.

 

The Mountaineers improved to 15-9 on the season while The Citadel fell to 8-15.  ASU will square off against Elon Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.  The match will take place at the Burlington Tennis Center.
