Southern Conference Announces Women’s Basketball All-Conference, Yearly Awards

Ten student-athletes receive all-conference honors

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Southern Conference women’s basketball coaches have selected the all-conference team for the 2007 season as well as the all-freshman team, Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year. The coaches’ selections are based on nominations from their teams.  Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players.

Chattanooga had two players earn all-league honors, including the 2007 Player of the Year, Alex Anderson.  The junior forward led the league in scoring (20.6), rebounding (10.4) and field goal percentage (51.7) throughout the regular season.  She was named the women’s basketball Player of the Week six times during the season, the most by any player since the start of the award.  Anderson is a two-time all-conference honoree while teammate Laura Hall was also named to the team.

Georgia Southern’s Carolyn Whitney was tabbed the Freshman of the Year by the coaches.  The guard was among the league’s leaders in assists with 3.28 per game and was second in scoring for Georgia Southern with 9.4 points per game.  In her first year as a Lady Eagle she started all 29 games for head coach Rusty Cram.  Whitney also earned all-freshman team honors while teammate Tiffany Brown was named to the all-conference team.

Three-year Western Carolina head coach Kellie Harper was named the Coach of the Year by her peers. Harper led the Lady Catamounts to a 15-3 record in league play and a share of the regular season conference title.  Harper and her squad will enter the 2007 SoCon Tournament as the No. 1 seed, the first-ever one seed garnered by the Lady Catamounts in school history.  This is Harper’s first Coach of the Year honor.

The Lady Catamounts landed the most players on the all-conference team with three.  Last year’s freshman of the year, Lauren Powell earned all-league honors this season along with juniors Monique Dawson and Chevon Keith.

UNC Greensboro’s Kristen Boone earned her second all-conference team honor with teammate Jasmine Byrd also being named to the team.  Appalachian State guard Whitney Tossie and Davidson guard Katie Hamilton also garnered all-league honors.

Appalachian State guard GiGi Thomas was named to the all-freshman team with Chattanooga’s Jenaya Wade-Fray also making the team.  Elon guard Tiffany Davis and Western Carolina’s Heather Swayne also earned all-freshman honors.
