Game 5: Georgia Southern 81, UNC Greensboro 64

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – Led by a well-balanced offensive attack, Georgia Southern defeated UNC Greensboro, 81-64, Thursday, in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament at North Charleston Coliseum.

 

The Lady Eagles improved to 13-17 on the season and will face No. 1 Western Carolina on Friday at noon in the semifinals. The fourth-seeded Lady Spartans ended their season at 20-10.

 

A 28 percent three-point shooting team on the season, fifth seeded Georgia Southern finished the day 9-for-18 (50 percent) from three-point range. In the previous two meetings, GSU combined to go 4-for-28 (14 percent) from beyond the three-point arc.

 

Tiffany Brown led all scorers as one of four Lady Eagles in double figures with 20 points on 4-for-6 shooting from three-point. Chequilla Jessie put up a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards from inside. SoCon Freshman of the Year, Carolyn Whitney and Ashley Rivens each added 10 points.

 

The Spartans were led by Kristen Boone’s 17 points and four steals. Irene Otamiri added 13 points.

 

The Lady Eagles opened the second half 4-for-4 from beyond the three-point arc as the Spartans couldn’t take advantage of their full-court pressure. With GSU leading by 12, UNCG used a 7-0 run to pull within eight at 51-43 with just under 12 minutes to go. The Lady Eagles countered with five straight of their own to take a 13-point, 56-43 lead with 10 minutes to play.

 

Led by Jessie, GSU extended its lead to as many as 18 at 72-54 with 4:30 to go in the game. The Lady Eagles held on to their lead as they went on to an 81-64 victory.

 

Georgia Southern jumped out to a quick lead and led by as many as seven at 13-6 in the opening five minutes of the game. UNC Greensboro went on a 7-0 run at that point to knot the game at 13 apiece with 12:27 to go in the period. After another tie at 15, the Spartans grabbed their first lead of the game at 17-15 with 9:30 to go in the half off a pair of free throws by Irene Otamiri.

 

A missed shot on GSU’s next possession led to a three by Boone to extend the lead to five points at 20-15 with nine minutes to go. UNCG’s largest lead of the half, seven points, came at the 8:09 mark at 24-17.

 

Trailing 26-20, the Eagles used a 9-0 run to regain a five-point lead at 31-26 with 3:20 to go in the opening half. The pace stayed much the same in the final three minutes of the period as GSU went into halftime with a 37-30 lead.

 

 

 

Game 6: Davidson 71, Wofford 62

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – Davidson used a late first-half run to take the lead and hold onto it as it defeated Wofford, 71-62, Thursday afternoon, in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament at North Charleston Coliseum.

 

The Lady Wildcats improved to 23-7 and will play No. 2 Chattanooga on Friday, at 2:30 p.m. The Terriers’ season ended at 13-16.

 

Mercedes Robinson led the third-seeded Lady Wildcats with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Danielle Hemerka and Katie Hamilton chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.

 

Sixth-seeded Wofford was led by Jennifer Weurding’s career-high 16 points on 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the three-point arc. Kelsi Koenig added 13 points and eight rebounds, while K.C. Correll chipped in 10 points.

 

Sparked by Weurding’s fourth trey on her fourth attempt, the Terriers cut Davidson’s eight-point halftime lead to three at 43-40 with 13:30 to go in the game. The Lady Wildcats used a 10-4 run in the next five minutes for a 53-44 lead with just over eight minutes to play.

 

Although they made several threats in the final eight minutes, the Terriers couldn’t retain the lead as the Lady Wildcats came out on top, 71-62.

 

Weurding scored 11 of Wofford’s first 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field and 3-of-3 from three-point to give the Terriers an early 13-7 advantage with 12:30 to go in the opening period.

 

Davidson clawed back, outscoring Wofford, 11-4 in the next four minutes to take its first lead since the 17:26 mark, at 18-17 with 7:38 left in the half.

 

The Wildcats used a late second-half run to reach an eight-point, 34-25, lead heading into intermission.
