SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Briana Tate, a member of the Appalachian State track and field team, has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for Dec. 11, the league office announced Wednesday.

Tate is a sophomore biology major from Summerfield, N.C., and currently holds a 3.84 GPA.

Tate helped the Mountaineers grab a second-place finish at the Appalachian Indoor Invitational last week in the squad's opening meet of the indoor season. She took first place in both the shot put and weight throw events, setting new personal records in each. Her toss of 17.31 meters (56-9.50) in the weight throw shattered her previous career best of 53-1 while her throw of 14.56 meters (47-9.25) was more than four feet better than her previous career-high mark of 43-2.50. Both performances put her in the all-time top 10 in Appalachian State history.

Also nominated for Student-Athlete of the Week were Davidson track and field athlete Ashlyn Gruber and Georgia Southern women’s basketball player Anna Claire Knight.
