Two earn NCBWA Freshman All-America honors

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Wofford third baseman John Dempsey and Samford first baseman Sonny DiChiara were named to the NCBWA Freshman All-American second team on Monday.

The 2019 NCBWA Freshman All-American Teams feature players from 30 schools and 16 different conferences with the ACC leading all conference with six players selected to the two teams combined. The Big Ten and Pac-12 put three players each on the team.

Dempsey, from Potomac, Maryland, started 60 games at third base. He finished fourth on the team with a .324 batting average, tied for second with seven home runs, and fourth with 41 RBIs. Among Southern Conference leaders he was first in doubles (22), ninth in hits (72) and ninth in slugging percentage (.536). He was named All-Southern Conference second team by the media and coaches.

DiChiara had an impressive freshman season, hitting 21 home runs, tying him for second on the school’s single-season home run list. He led the Bulldogs with 55 RBIs for the season, hitting .293 and recording a team-best .646 slugging percentage. The Hoover, Alabama, native, had 15 multi-hit games and a team-high 15 multi-RBI games.

The Freshman All-American team is voted upon by the membership of the NCBWA. The 2019 NCBWA National Freshman Player of the Year and National Freshman Pitcher of the Year will be announced on Tuesday, June 11.
