MACON, Ga. – Mercer men's soccer forward Will Bagrou was named to the 2017 Men's MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List on Tuesday by the United Soccer Coaches.
The award is given annually to the top NCAA Division I men's soccer player by the United Soccer Coaches, formerly known as the National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA).
"This is a great achievement for Will as well as our program," stated Mercer head coach Brad Ruzzo. "He is coming off one of his better seasons last year and continued to develop his game throughout the spring and summer. We certainly are going to rely on him in our attack to produce goals and assists."
Bagrou claimed various national and Southern Conference honors during the 2016 season, including SoCon Male Athlete of the Year, leading the Bears to a SoCon tournament title and their first NCAA tournament appearance in 15 years. Bagrou was named a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy in 2016 and garnered All-America accolades by the NSCAA. Bagrou is one of five 2016 semifinalists to return for the 2017 season.
Bagrou notched a team-high eight goals, including a pair of game-winning strikes, en route to a 20-point performance in 2016. He enters his senior season as the conference's active career leader in points (63) and game-winning goals (9) while ranking second in assists (13) and third in goals (25).
Mercer kicks off the regular season on Friday, Aug. 25, when the Bears travel north to Atlanta, Ga., to take on Georgia State. The contest will begin at 7 p.m.
Prior to the first regular-season contest, the Bears will travel to Nashville, Tenn., on Monday to take on Belmont in the first of two exhibitions for the Orange and Black this season. The contest is slated to kick off at 1 p.m.
