WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – UNCG men’s and women’s indoor track teams began their 2017-18 campaigns Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Early Bird, the only Blue and Gold home meet of the season. The Spartans competed against some of the best runners in the area at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.
The Spartans had strong showings on both sides. Four men finished fifth, eighth, 11th and 14th in the men’s 800-meter run, with Weston Clayton leading the way by clocking a 2:02.89 and Trelek Jones registering a 2:05.34. Luke Sumerford placed fifth in the men’s mile with a time of 4:28.11, and Alex Roy finished 11th at 4:38.17. William Sandin (9:24.41) finished 10th in the 3,000-meter. The quartet of Palmer Dupree, Colyn Todd, Logan Sprinkle and Karl Barksdale also placed 10th in the 4x400-meter relay. Ny-Juan Williams finished 12th in the men’s long jump.
On the women’s side, Taylor Delaney was the top finisher in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.14, and India Godlock was right behind her for second at 2:25.13. Malea Smith (2:29.11) placed fourth, Kelsey Barrett (2:30.82) was seventh, Kassidy Dill (2:34.07) finished ninth and Kayla Wetherell (2:35.18) was 10th.
Ariana Garcia finished fifth in the 3,000-meter at 10:48.56, and Lefler McManus placed 10th in the mile with a 10:48.56. Dill, Smith, Josie McGee and Olivia Rothenburg finished ninth in the 4x400-meter relay at a time of 4:28.74.
The Blue & Gold returns to action after a brief winter break on the same track at the JDL New Year College Kick-Off on Jan. 7 at 10 a.m.
