DES MOINES, Iowa – Furman cross country/track and field alum Tripp Hurt won the men’s USATF One Mile Road Championship Tuesday with a time of 4:03.9. The race was held in conjunction with the annual Grand Blue Mile Street Run in Des Moines, Iowa.

“It is really exciting to see Tripp continue on in the sport and earn his first national title,” said Furman head coach Robert Gary. “He was everything you would hope for from a student-athlete during his time here at Furman, and we are very proud to see him developing so well.”

A native of Bogart, Ga., Hurt earned a physics degree from Furman in 2015. The 2015 Furman Male Athlete of the Year, he finished 20th in the 3,000m Steeplechase at the NCAA Outdoor Championships as a senior. At the 2015 NCAA East Preliminaries, Hurt broke his own then school record and advanced to the NCAA semifinal race after placing second in his heat and ninth overall with a time of 8:41.63 in the event.

The SoCon Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Year in 2014, Hurt was voted the SoCon Men’s Indoor Track Most Outstanding Athlete and Most Outstanding Performer in February of 2015. The first Furman men’s runner to earn All-SoCon honors four consecutive years for cross country, Hurt helped the Paladins to a second-place finish at the 2014 NCAA regional cross country meet, where he led the team with an eighth-place finish to earn all-region honors.
