Steelman wins gold, Jennings silver at NACAC Championshipsfu

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford College track and field student-athlete Hannah Steelman competed for Team USA and finished first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2019 North American, Central American, & Caribbean (NACAC) Under 23 Championships held in Queretaro, Mexico on July 6, 2019.

A sophomore from Orono, Maine, Steelman ran the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:21.88 at altitude. The meet featured athletes from 31 different countries across the NACAC region. Gabbi Jennings of Furman was second at 10:47.35, followed by Nayelly Mendoza (Mexico) at 11:18.66 and Arian Iveth Chia (Mexico) at 11:48.30.

Steelman has finished her spring season. It was highlighted by a third-place finish at the 2019 NCAA Championships in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She also finished eighth in the 5,000-meter run to earn first-team All-America honors in both events. Steelman is the 2019 Southern Conference champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, as well.

An All-American in the event, Jennings qualified for the NACAC Championships after placing ninth with a time of 9:58.83 at the NCAA Championships in June. A native of Slidell, Louisiana, Jennings set a program record with a time of 9:47.84 to take second place in the semifinals of the event at the national championships. Jennings, who claimed first place in the event at the 2019 Cardinal Classic and the 2019 Raleigh Relays, won her heat and placed third overall at the 2019 NCAA East Preliminaries.
