SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced its December athletes of the month for men’s and women’s basketball and wrestling Thursday, highlighting excellence among student-athletes during the month.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
Fletcher Magee, Wofford, Jr., G
Wofford guard Fletcher Magee earned his second straight monthly honor after averaging 26.6 points per game in helping the Terriers to a 4-1 December record that included a home win over Georgia Tech and a victory at No. 5 North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The junior from Orlando, Florida, scored at least 21 points in each contest, highlighted by tying his career high of 36 against the Yellow Jackets on Dec. 6. Magee’s step-back 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds left – his eighth triple of the game – lifted Wofford to the 63-60 win. He followed that with 22 points in just 15 minutes against Johnson & Wales before dropping 27 in consecutive games against High Point and the Tar Heels. The win over UNC was Wofford’s first ever over a top-25 team and the first for a SoCon team since 2012. Magee closed his month with 21 points in a loss to UNCG to open league play. He hit at least four 3-pointers in each of his five December games and shot 53 percent from 3-point range for the month (28-for-53). He remained perfect from the free-throw line on the season, connecting on all 17 of his attempts in the month.

Others nominated: Tariq Simmons (The Citadel), Desonta Bradford (ETSU), Devin Sibley (Furman), Ria’n Holland (Mercer), Francis Alonso (UNCG), Demetrius Denzel-Dyson (Samford), Makinde London (Chattanooga) and Mike Amius (Western Carolina).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Kahlia Lawrence, Mercer, Sr., G
Mercer’s Kahlia Lawrence averaged 20.4 points and 8.0 rebounds per game as the Bears posted an 8-0 record in December and extended their winning streak to 10 games. The senior guard started December with an 18-point, five-rebound, five-assist performance against Davidson and seven days later posted the first of her three double-doubles of the month in a win at UNC Asheville. The Columbus, Georgia, native finished the contest with 23 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 50 percent from the floor. Lawrence followed that performance with 26 points and seven rebounds against Winthrop, shooting a blistering 75 percent from the field and handing out eight assists. Her second double-double of the month came against South Carolina State as she tallied 17 points and 11 boards. The 5-8 guard then exploded for 39 points and 13 rebounds, both career bests, as the Bears downed ACC opponent North Carolina on Dec. 28. Lawrence, whose 39 points is the highest single-game total in the conference this season, played all but one minute in the contest and sank six 3-pointers. The win over the Tar Heels marked the first win over an ACC foe in program history and the Southern Conference’s fifth win over a Power 5 program this season. Lawrence rounded out 2017 with 27 points, seven rebounds and six assists at Charlotte. Lawrence is now just 63 points shy of the 2,000-point plateau and has jumped to fourth all-time in the Mercer scoring record book.

Others nominated: Tianna Tarter (ETSU), Cierra Carter (Furman), Ije Ajemba (UNCG), Hannah Nichols (Samford) and Aryanna Gilbert (Chattanooga).

WRESTLING
Forrest Przybysz, Appalachian State, Sr., 174 pounds
Appalachian State’s Forrest Przybysz posted a 3-0 record in the month of December, including a win over a top-20 opponent. Wrestling in the 174-pound division, Przybysz helped lift the Mountaineers to an 18-14 victory over Ohio by picking up a 6-1 decision over Joe Terry. The Jefferson, Georgia, native then scored the lone victory for Appalachian State against No. 6 NC State, defeating Daniel Bullard 10-4. Przybysz capped off the month with a 4-2 sudden-victory performance over Oklahoma’s No. 11-ranked Yoanse Mejas, boosting his national ranking at 174 pounds to No. 17.
