ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Southern Conference held its annual basketball Tip-Off event Wednesday at the Highland Brewing Company, where several local tournament supporters and dignitaries were on hand to welcome the impending start of the college basketball season.
The event was emceed by Rick Rice, the voice of the SoCon Basketball Championships presented by General Shale. SoCon Commissioner John Iamarino and Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission Executive Director Demp Bradford addressed the group, which included the local organizing committee, tournament volunteers and sponsors. ETSU men’s basketball coach Steve Forbes and Furman women’s basketball coach Jackie Carson also spoke.
Bill Murdock, executive director of Eblen Charities, was on-hand to represent the Hoops Against Hunger campaign, which collects food and donations to assist hungry children. More information can be found at www.hoopsagainsthunger.net.

The 2018 SoCon Basketball Championships presented by General Shale will take place at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville from March 1-5, with the women’s title game set for a noon tip on Sunday, March 4, and the men’s title contest beginning at 9 p.m. Monday, March 5, on ESPN or ESPN2.
