SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its football players of the week Monday for all games played Saturday, Nov. 2. Chattanooga quarterback Jacob Huesman was named the Offensive Player of the Week, while Furman’s Ira McCune was tabbed the Defensive Player of the Week. Appalachian State running back Marcus Cox earned the league’s Freshman of the Week honor and Furman’s Ray Early was named the Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jacob Huesman, Chattanooga, So., QB, Chattanooga, Tenn.
Chattanooga quarterback Jacob Huesman led UTC to its second fourth-quarter comeback as the Mocs topped Appalachian State, 35-28. Huesman rushed 16 times for 132 yards and one touchdown. The sophomore also completed 13-of-19 passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns through the air. He was 6-of-6 passing for 90 yards and two scores in the decisive fourth quarter as the Mocs won in Boone, N.C., for the first time since 1983.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Ira McCune, Furman, Jr., DE, Marietta, Ga.
Junior defensive end Ira McCune keyed a solid Furman defensive effort Saturday as the Paladins held off Georgia Southern, 16-14. McCune tallied six tackles and recovered two fumbles in the win. His first fumble recovery came at the Furman 26-yard line in the second quarter, ending a GSU scoring threat. In the fourth quarter with the Paladins holding a 16-14 lead, McCune scooped up a fumble with 5:06 remaining at the Eagles’ 45-yard line. The Paladins’ offense was able to run out the clock from there to secure the win. The Furman defense held Georgia Southern 119 yards below its season average.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Marcus Cox, Appalachian State, RB, Dacula, Ga.
Appalachian State running back Marcus Cox won the Freshman of the Week award for the fourth time this season. Cox rushed 29 times for 158 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday’s game against Chattanooga. The Dacula, Ga., native added two receptions for six yards against the Mocs. It was Cox’s fourth 100-yard game this season in his seven starts. He needs just 143 yards to become the third Mountaineer freshman to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, joining Armanti Edwards (2006) and Chip Hooks (1991).

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Ray Early, Furman, Sr., PK/P, Darlington, S.C.
Ray Early provided the game-winning points with an 18-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter of Furman’s 16-14 win at Georgia Southern. The senior also averaged 51.0 yards on four punts, including a 59-yard effort in the first half. He had two kicks travel over 50 yards and placed one inside the GSU 20-yard line. The senior was perfect in his kickoffs, as he forced four touchbacks.
