SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Western Carolina junior Ross Heffley has been named the Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Week while Furman freshman Tyler Wood has been selected as the league's Pitcher of the Week from the opening weekend of the 2011 baseball season.

Heffley led the Catamounts by hitting 9-for-12 (.750) in a three-game sweep of Morehead State over the weekend. The second baseman collected a home run and a pair of doubles while driving in nine runs. Heffley was a career-best 5-for-5 with five RBIs and four runs scored in the Catamounts' 18-0 win on Saturday. The Snellville, Ga., native also added three walks and a hit by pitch to record an .812 on-base percentage.

A true freshman making his first career start, Wood retired the first 16 batters he faced before yielding his only hit with one out in the sixth inning. The right-hander from St. Louis. Mo., faced just one batter over the minimum in eight innings of work while fanning six batters and walking two. Wood shared a shutout in the Paladins' 7-0 victory that clinched a four-game series sweep against Ohio.
