Tournament play begins with fourth seed UNC Greensboro facing fifth seed Furman at 10 am. At 1 pm, league regular season champion and top seed Western Carolina will face eighth seed Davidson. At 4 pm, the #2 seed, Georgia Southern, will meet seventh seed VMI. The first day will conclude with #3 seed The Citadel facing #6 College of Charleston.
The league regular season standings finished in a three-way tie for fourth place between UNC Greensboro, Furman, and College of Charleston. The tiebreaker formula first compared how each team did against the others involved in the tie. All three teams were 3-3 against each other.
The next tiebreaker criteria is to compare each team against the highest seed. UNCG swept a three-game series from Western Carolina back on April 11-13. That sweep gave the Spartans the fourth seed. Furman earns the fifth seed by virtue of taking two of three games from College of Charleston on April 18-20.
Play continues on Thursday and Friday with four games each day at 10 am, 1 pm, 4 pm and 7:30 pm. The loser?s bracket final is scheduled for noon on Saturday, May 24, with the first championship game at 7:00 that evening. If the team from the loser?s bracket wins and forces a second championship game, that will be played at 1:00 pm on Sunday, May 25.
The winner of the Southern Conference Championship will advance to the NCAA Regionals which begin on Friday, May 30.
