CHARLESTON, S.C. – North Georgia fired a team score of 2289 to win the team smallbore title and Nighthawks Dakota Spivey won the individual title and Smallbore Athlete of the Year honors on the first day of the Southern Conference Rifle Championship at The Citadel’s Inouye Marksmanship Center on Saturday.

The tournament concludes Sunday with the air rifle competition. The SoCon will crown team air rifle and overall champions as well as an air rifle individual champion.
North Georgia put all four of its scorers in the individual smallbore final, which featured the top eight shooters after three relays determined the team scores.

The Citadel came in second place, totaling 2241 in the smallbore. North Georgia’s Dakota Spivey and Tobin Sanctuary finished first and second, respectively, in the smallbore final, with The Citadel’s Alexander McAlear placing third.

UAB and the VMI mixed team tied for third with a score of 2228, followed by Georgia Southern, VMI women, Wofford, and The Citadel women.

Ruthanne Conner and Ricky Medina of North Georgia finished fifth and sixth, while VMI’s Jacob Hunter placed seventh and Allison Auten (The Citadel) finished eighth.
It was the Nighthawks’ Ricky Medina who led the field heading into the final, posting a 577 in the second relay. Tobin Sanctuary fired a 575 and Spivey a 571 to claim the top three spots heading into the final.

The Citadel’s Allison Auten, who finished eighth, shot a 568 to head into the finals in fourth place. VMI’s Hunter Jacob (566) and North Georgia’s Conner each posted a score of 566 while UAB’s Selina Curren (565) and The Citadel’s Alexander McAlear (563) rounded out the top eight.

Spivey, a junior from Dahlonega, Georgia, claims the second consecutive smallbore title for North Georgia. Spivey’s teammate Conner won the award in 2017 with a score of 449.4; both were named first team All-SoCon in smallbore after Saturday’s results. McAlear, Sanctuary and Curren round out the first team.

Medina, Hunter, and Auten are joined on the second team by UAB’s Olivia Francisco and VMI’s John Pittman.

Sunday’s air rifle competition gets underway at 7:45 a.m. with preparation and sighting, followed by the first relay at 8:00.
