MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's lacrosse team will be dancing in May for the first time in program history as it faces Wagner in the play-in game of the 2018 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championships on Wednesday, May 9 in Staten Island, New York.
Wagner will host the contest, which will be played at 1 p.m. (ET). The winner of the play-in game will face No. 7 Towson in the first round in Towson, Maryland on May 11.
Wednesday's contest marks the first time Mercer and Wagner will have faced one another in women's lacrosse. The Seahawks went 13-5 overall this season and won the Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament title for a second time in three years on Saturday by defeating Bryant in double-overtime.
In just its fourth season since the program was established (2015), Mercer won the inaugural Southern Conference Championship on Saturday by defeating Furman, 18-8, at Five Star Stadium in Macon to earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
"It's a little unbelievable to see this unfold after we made our goals to win a conference championship and reach the NCAA Tournament; those have been our goals all year," said head coach Samantha Eustace. "Just seeing our name [on the selection show] and the way they talked about our program is so exciting for our team.
"We have an opportunity to do something special and continue our season after the great run through the SoCon Tournament last weekend."
Mercer (9-10) enters the NCAA Tournament on a four-game win streak after it closed out the regular season with a pair of wins and went on to defeat top-seeded Detroit Mercy and third-seeded Furman in the SoCon Tournament. The Bears – who are just one of two programs making their debut appearance in the NCAA Tournament – went 7-10 in the regular season and can reach double-digit wins for just the second time in program history with a win in the play-in game.
