INDIANAPOLIS – Twenty-three Southern Conference programs were honored with NCAA Public Recognition Awards for finishing in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports in the NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate for the 2015-16 academic year.
ETSU, Chattanooga and Wofford each had four programs recognized. ETSU’s men’s golf, men’s tennis, women’s golf and volleyball teams were honored, while Chattanooga’s women’s basketball, women’s cross country, women’s tennis and women’s track teams also finished in the top 10 percent nationally. Wofford’s baseball, men’s golf, rifle and women’s basketball squads also reached that benchmark.
Furman and UNCG had three programs each earn the distinction. The Paladins were represented by their men’s and women’s soccer and men’s track programs, while the Spartans saw their women’s cross country, women’s track and volleyball teams honored.
Mercer (men’s golf and women’s soccer) and Samford (volleyball and men’s cross country) had two each, while Western Carolina saw its men’s golf team earn mention.
Five SoCon champions were among those who were recognized. ETSU’s men’s golf team won the 2016 SoCon Men’s Golf Championship, while the Bucs’ men’s tennis team won tournament and regular-season crowns. Furman’s soccer programs each won SoCon tournament titles, while Chattanooga’s women’s basketball program shared the regular-season crown and won the league tournament.
Four of the SoCon’s eight men’s golf programs earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards, and three volleyball squads were among those honored.
