SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina’ Dakota Lamont and Samford’s Tray Oates have been named the Southern Conference men’s indoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively, while Western Carolina’s Ty-Leah Hampton and Samford’s Erin Hines claimed the honors on the women’s side, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included competition held Jan. 12-13.
Western Carolina’s Lamont posted a couple of conference-best times for the Catamounts at the ETSU Track and Field Invitational, doing so in the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash. The senior from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, turned in a time of 22.17 in the preliminary heats of the 200, finishing second in his heat and ninth overall in a field that included former Olympian and Catamount Manteo Mitchell. Lamont also posted a SoCon-best time of 49.23 as the top qualifier in the prelims of the 400 before taking second in the finals in 49.53.
Samford’s Oates placed fourth in the elite competition of the National Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nevada, on Friday. The redshirt senior from Acworth, Georgia, turned in a jump of 5.58 meters (18 feet, 4 inches), good for a new school record as well as the conference lead. His leap is second among NCAA DI student-athletes this indoor season and easily outdistances the SoCon record of 5.50 meters, which he set at the BSC Panther Indoor Icebreaker on Dec. 1 of this season.
Like her teammate Lamont, Western Carolina’s Hampton turned in a pair of conference-best performances at the ETSU Track and Field Invitational. A graduate transfer from Winston-Salem State and a native of Eden, North Carolina, Hampton won her preliminary of the 60-meter dash in a SoCon-best time of 7.62 seconds. She then tied for third in the final in 7.67. In the 200-meter dash, Hampton turned in the top collegiate finish in the finals in 24.86 seconds. She won her preliminary heat in 25.13.
Samford’s Hines turned in the best long-jump leap of the young SoCon season at the UAB Blazer Invitational on Friday. The sophomore from Pelham, Alabama, posted a mark of 5.79 meters (19 feet) to finish second in the event. Hines also competed in a pair of track events, the 60-meter dash and the 60-meter hurdles.

Also nominated for men’s field athlete of the week: Ben Johnson (ETSU), Dijoun Huitt (Western Carolina).
