AUSTIN, Texas – University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior Abby Bateman was named a Google Cloud Academic All-America selected by CoSIDA, the organization announced Thursday.
Bateman, a middle-distance runner for the Mocs, was named to the Academic All-America Third Team for Cross Country and Track and Field with a 4.0 GPA in marketing.
“It’s a great honor for Abby, her family, the athletics department and, of course, UTC,” Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said. “To be named one of the very brightest of the most athletically gifted in Division I is truly a blessing. She is one of our hardest working athletes and then she carries that same motivation, dedication and commitment into the classroom.”
She was named to the SoCon Fall All-Academic Team as a member of the cross country team and then earned a spot on the SoCon Spring All-Academic Team as a member of the indoor and outdoor track and field teams. Bateman was named to the league’s Academic Honor Roll and is a recipient of the SoCon Commissioner’s Medal for Academics.
Bateman earned all-conference honors as a member of the women’s distance medley relay team at the Southern Conference Indoor Championships last winter. She set personal records in the 800-meter run in both the indoor and outdoor seasons and helped the Mocs along the way as the team placed second in the SoCon Cross Country Championships.
“Abby represents us in the fall with cross country and carries that into the winter and spring with our indoor and outdoor track,” Meyer said. “She runs everything from the 800-meter to the 4x100-meter relay.
“Coach Amanda [Cotter] and Coach [Michael] Gadson and I are all unbelievable lucky to work with such a talented young lady. Maybe the very best thing about Abby is how much integrity, unselfishness and fun she brings to our team and this university each and every day. We are very proud of her.”
Among the 90 student-athletes selected to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division I Cross Country/Track & Field teams, 20 men and 33 women carry a 4.0 grade-point average or higher, including all 15 women on the first team. The 15 members of the men’s cross country/track & field team carry an average GPA of 3.98, while the women’s team carry a 4.04 GPA.
