Wofford Opens Season 2017 Season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2017 season on Friday night at the 34th Eye Opener Invitational at the Roger Milliken Research Center. The women and men both finished second overall among NCAA Division I teams.  

In the women's 5K race, freshman Hannah Steelman was second overall in 17:37.5. Her time was the fastest in school history, surpassing the previous mark of 18:06.00 set in 2013. Anya Bunao was the next Terrier to cross the finish in 20:01.01, followed by Shannon McAndrew in 20:03.1, Mary Wilson Stewart in 20:04.2, and Taryn Schoen in 20:09.2. Also running for the Terriers were Whitley Elsass, Rebeka Fadgyas, Madison Paraskeva, Jamie Barnett, Alexandria Christopoulos, Chandler Washburn, Anastasia Burroughs, Ashley McCreary, and Sommer McKenzie.

The men's 8K competition followed and sophomore Jack Zemp was the top finisher for the Terriers with a time of 27:23.1 for 21st place. Ethan Epstein ran a 27:31.7, followed by Cisco Ferre at 27:43.9, Cristian Widenhouse at 27:45.7 and Ben Hensley in 29:24.1. VMI Opens Season at Hokie Invite

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The VMI men's cross country team finished second and the women's program placed third at the Hokie Invite, contested Friday evening in Blacksburg, Va. The meet was the season opener for both programs.

The VMI men saw young runners lead the way, as sophomores Justin Adams (10th/19:15) and Jahanzib Shabaz (13th/19:21) paced the Keydets. Micah Ellington was VMI's #3 (19th/19:37), while two freshmen - Davone Hernandez (22nd/19:43) and Jackson Betts (23rd/19:46) - rounded out the top five runners on the 6K course.

As a team, the Keydets' second-place finish saw the team credited with 50 points. Concord won the race with 38 points, while Radford finished third (57), Washington and Lee was fourth (77) and Longwood rounded out the teams in action (139). Read More

Furman Wins Second-Consecutive Eye Opener Invitational Title

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Furman cross country teams opened the 2017 season Friday with their second-consecutive Eye Opener Invitational titles at the Milliken Research Center in Spartanburg, S.C.  The Paladin men scored 15 points for the win, while the Paladin women tallied 19 points in the victory.

Furman runners took the top nine scored spots in the men's 8K race.  Junior Aaron Templeton won individual honors, placing first with a time of 25:03.1, followed by rookie Daniel Bernal in second with a time of 25:06.2.  Senior Lee Shearer finished third with a time of 25:32.5, while sophomore Jake Ogdenturned in a fourth-place finish with a time of 25:38.7.  Freshman Trent Mandato finished fifth with a time of 25:38.9 in his collegiate debut, and fellow freshman Allen Clark posted a time of 25:49.7 for sixth place. Bucs Claim Top-Half Spots at Covered Bridge

Boone, N.C. -- ETSU’s cross country teams posted top-tier finishes Friday in their first meet of the season, the Covered Bridge Open in Boone, N.C.

The Buccaneer men finished 4th out of 11 teams, and the women 5th out of 12, on a soggy State Farm Fields/Kennedy course.

Lindsey Stallworth (Knoxville, Tenn.), in her first collegiate meet, was ETSU’s top individual, crossing the line 7th in the women’s 5K. Adam Bradtmueller(Sarasota, Fla.) topped the Buc men with an 11th-place result in the 8K.

Nathan Longfellow (Cookeville, Tenn.) and James Garst (Jonesborough, Tenn.) finished 17th and 18th, respectively, giving the ETSU men three runners in the top 20.

The rest of ETSU’s top five was Daniel Sonnenfeldt (Knoxville, Tenn.) in 24th and Louis Morris (Knoxville, Tenn.) in 30th. Read More

Mercer Participates in Strut's Season Opener

OXFORD, Ala. – The Mercer men's and women's cross country teams placed fourth and eighth, respectively, on Friday at the Strut's Season Opener, hosted by Jacksonville State. Both events were held at the Oxford Lake & Recreation Park.
 
Mercer's men averaged 16 minutes and 35 seconds to complete the 5K event and were led by freshman Sean Parker, who placed 22nd with a 15:47.40 finish. Austin Bailey was the second Mercer men's runner to cross the finish line with a sub-16:30 finish. A total of six men competed for the Bears.
 
The men finished behind Red Division winner Georgia Tech, runner-up Troy and Alabama while placing ahead of Southern Conference foe Samford, Jacksonville State and Alabama State.
 
Mercer's women, who averaged 17:43 for their 4K event, were led by freshman Marina Van Sickle's 34th-place time of 16:13.10. Five Bears competed in the women's event. Read More

Young Bulldog Squad Opens at Jacksonville State

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. -- The Samford men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2017 season at the JSU Struts Season Opener held just off the campus of Jacksonville State University at Oxford Lake on Friday evening. The Bulldogs entered a young group of athletes on both the men's and women's side of the field.
 
The Bulldogs took home a sixth-place finish in the women's 4k and a fifth-place finish in the men's 5K. Georgia Tech took the team title in both the men's 5K and the women's 4K. Alabama's men finished second followed by Troy, while the Troy women took second just ahead of Alabama. Read More
