• Seven Southern Conference teams are in action Saturday, with Samford and Wofford idle. Mercer was also scheduled to be idle but added a game against Presbyterian after PC saw its week-one game at Stetson canceled by Hurricane Dorian.

• Two squads visit FBS teams, with Western Carolina facing NC State and Furman taking on Georgia State, which earned a 38-30 win at Tennessee on Aug. 31.

• Mercer opened league play with a 49-27 win at Western Carolina on Aug. 31, with quarterback Robert Riddle throwing for 207 yards and four touchdowns. His four TDs all came in the first half, which ties for third in a half in SoCon history. His 85-yard TD strike in the second quarter was the second-longest play from scrimmage in school history.

• Mercer sophomore David Durden returned the opening kickoff 82 yards against WCU and added another return later to finish at 115 return yards on the day. His average of 57.5 yards per return leads the FCS. Durden also notched 106 receiving yards and a touchdown, while fellow receiver Tucker Cannon had 93 receiving yards on two catches, with his average of 46.5 good for the FCS lead.

• Catamount quarterback Tyrie Adams set a pair of school records in the loss, passing for 318 yards to become Western Carolina's career leader with 7,597 yards and adding 34 rushing yards to become the Catamount leader with 9,741 yards of total offense. Those marks rank 10th and fifth in SoCon history, respectively.

• Powered by 131 yards and a TD on the ground from Devin Wynn, Furman rolled to a 46-13 win over Charleston Southern on Aug. 31 and jumped six spots to No. 11 in the latest AFCA poll. The Paladins also moved up two spots in the STATS poll to No. 17.

• Preseason SoCon favorite Wofford dropped a 28-13 decision at South Carolina State to open its season. The Terriers fell 12 spots to No. 20 in the coaches poll and 10 to No. 19 in the STATS poll.

• Chattanooga and The Citadel are receiving votes in both polls. The Mocs opened their season with a 24-10 win over Eastern Illinois on Aug. 29, while The Citadel pushed then-No. 12/11 Towson to the brink in a 28-21 loss on Aug. 31. Chattanooga's win was the first of first-year head coach Rusty Wright's career.

• Wide receiver Bryce Nunnelly had exactly 100 yards receiving for the Mocs, marking the seventh 100-yard game in his career, tied for third in school history.

• Citadel quarterback Brandon Rainey rushed a career-high 32 times for 166 yards and a touchdown in the loss to Towson, also throwing a TD pass to put the Bulldogs ahead 21-20 with 3:31 left before the Tigers rallied for the late win.

• With two games under his belt already, Samford quarterback Chris Oladokun leads all FCS players in passing efficiency (281.0), passing TDs (seven), passing yards (553), yards per pass attempt (16.26) and points responsible for (56).

• Samford senior wide receiver Chris Shelling had 185 yards and four TD catches in the loss to Tennessee Tech, good for the FCS leads in TD catches and total TDs, while sophomore placekicker Mitchell Fineran accounted for 16 points, converting all seven of his point-after tries and going 3-for-3 on field-goal attempts.
