CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina junior punter Ian Berryman was selected to the 2017 Preseason FCS All-America Team as selected and released Wednesday by Athlon Sports. Berryman, a 2016 All-Southern Conference selection, is just one of four underclassmen on the preseason 27-member squad.
Berryman, a rising redshirt junior punter from Marietta, Ga., is the only representative from the Southern Conference on the publication's preseason All-America squad. The team is comprised of players from 19 different schools and 10 conferences overall.
Selected to the HERO Sports 2016 FCS Sophomore All-America team a season ago, Berryman finished the season with a WCU single-season record punting average at 44.9 yards per punt – a mark which ranked second in the SoCon and put him fourth nationally. He punted a combined 52 times for 2,335 yards with 19 punts of 50 or more yards, including a career-long boot of 64 yards twice. He was a critical part of turning field position for the Catamounts, downing 18 punts inside the opponents' 20-yard line with just four touchbacks.
After being a finalist for the nation's top freshman honors in 2015, Berryman was the lone Catamount to garner first-team All-Southern Conference plaudits from the league's head coaches last season, while also collecting second-team honors from the voting media.
Western Carolina's football student-athletes officially report to campus for the 2017 fall camp on Monday, July 31, with practice opening on Tuesday, Aug. 1, with the first of two acclimation-period, helmet-only sessions. WCU's first day in full pads in the fall is slated for Saturday, Aug. 5.
