SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its football players of the week Monday for all games played Sept. 14-15. Mercer quarterback Robert Riddle and kicker Cole Fisher were named the Offensive Player of the Week and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively, while ETSU linebacker Jared Folks was named the Defensive Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Robert Riddle, Mercer, R-Fr., QB, Lookout Mountain, Tenn.
Mercer quarterback Robert Riddle was 23-for-34 for 316 yards and a touchdown through the air Saturday as the Bears knocked off No. 9 and preseason SoCon favorite Samford, 30-24, on the road. Riddle also ran for two scores on the day in his first full game under center for Mercer. Riddle’s 1-yard TD run in the first quarter tied the game at 7 and his 10-yard scoring run shortly into the second quarter staked the Bears to a 14-7 lead they would not relinquish. His 73-yard touchdown pass with 9:55 left in the contest made it a 27-14 affair. Riddle’s 316 passing yards were the third-most in a game in Mercer history.

Other nominees: Quay Holmes (ETSU), Devlin Hodges (Samford), Tyrell Price (Chattanooga), Connell Young (Western Carolina) and Andre Stoddard (Wofford).

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jared Folks, ETSU, R-Sr., LB, Harrisburg, Pa.
ETSU’s Jared Folks made his mark in several ways in the Bucs’ 27-24 win at VMI on Friday. The redshirt senior linebacker recorded eight tackles (four solo), including 3.5 sacks for 26 yards, the most sacks in a game by a SoCon player since 2011. Folks also forced a fumble and had one of ETSU’s five interceptions on the day en route to helping hold the Keydets to -28 yards rushing. ETSU’s road win was its first over a SoCon opponent since it relaunched its football program and rejoined the league, with the last road victory coming in 2002.

Other nominees: Harrison Poole (Mercer), Aaron Harris (Samford), Hawk Schrider (Chattanooga), Devin Carper (VMI), JerMichael White (Western Carolina) and Weston Rountree (Wofford).

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Cole Fisher, Mercer, Sr., PK, Walnut Grove, Ga.
Mercer kicker Cole Fisher was instrumental in helping the Bears knock off No. 9 Samford on the road Saturday, as he personally accounted for 12 points in Mercer’s 30-24 win. Fisher hit three field goals in the win, converting from 33, 39 and 41 yards, and making all three of his extra-point attempts. His 33-yard field goal as time expired in the first half sent the Bears into the locker room with a 17-7 lead, while his other two came in the fourth quarter with the Bulldogs trying to rally. His 41-yarder with 4:37 left made it a two-possession game. Fisher also kicked off six times, averaging 56.7 yards per kick and earning four touchbacks.

Other nominees: Quan Harrison (ETSU), Victor Ulmo (Chattanooga) and Luke Carter (Wofford).
