GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman quarterback Darren Grainger, who earlier Monday was named Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week, has been tabbed STATS National Freshman of the Week, it was just announced.
Making only the third start of his career and facing FBS member Georgia State, the Paladin redshirt freshman completed 16-of-25 passes for 323 yards and four touchdowns while rushing also nine times for 53 yards and a score in the Paladins’ 48-42 loss to the Panthers.
The Conway, South Carolina, product threw touchdown strikes covering 18, 32, 11 and 30 yards, and his scoring run went for 12 yards with 3:26 remaining in the game to pull Furman to within 48-42.
His stellar play help Furman roll up 526 yards in total offense, and the Paladins’ 42-point outing tied the school standard for most points scored against a FBS foe since the program reclassified to NCAA I-AA (now FCS) in 1982.
Furman (1-1) plays Virginia Tech this Saturday in a 12:05 p.m., ACC Network televised game.
Chattanooga running back Ailym Ford is on the honorable mention list for the STATS FCS National Player of the Week after leading the Mocs with 127 rushing yards at No. 17/18 Jacksonville State on Saturday. The Citadel's Sean-Thomas Faulkner earned honorable mention for STATS FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week after blocking a pair of punts in the Bulldogs' 35-28 loss at Elon on Saturday.
