SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman football player Hamp Sisson has been named the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for all competition from Oct. 30 – Nov. 5. The selection is made by the league office.
Sisson came off the bench on Nov. 2 in a road game at Chattanooga to lead nationally ranked Furman to a 35-20 victory. With the Paladins down 9-0 in the second quarter, the Birmingham, Alabama, native led a pair of second-quarter touchdown drives to take a 14-12 lead into halftime and engineered a total of five touchdown drives over seven possessions under center. Sisson completed 9-of-14 passes for 99 yards and a touchdown and ran it six times for 52 yards and another touchdown. The redshirt freshman was featured on SportCenter’s Top 10 plays for his effort to push teammate Devin Abrams through a group of defenders, allowing the fullback to break through for a 31-yard touchdown run. The comeback win marked the first time since 2006 that a Furman quarterback came off the bench to lead the Paladins from a deficit to victory.
Sisson is a health sciences major and currently holds a 4.00 grade point average.
Furman will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts VMI at 1 p.m.
Also nominated for SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week: Nigel Leo (Belmont men’s soccer), Sharlissa de Jesus (The Citadel volleyball), Shiso Go (ETSU men’s golf), Bryce Nunnelly (Chattanooga football) and Catie Cronister (Wofford volleyball).
