SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its football players of the week Monday for all games played Sept. 23. Western Carolina quarterback Tyrie Adams and defensive back Keion Crossen were named the Offensive Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, while ETSU kicker JJ Jerman was voted the Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Tyrie Adams, Western Carolina, R-So., QB, St. Petersburg, Fla.
Western Carolina quarterback Tyrie Adams led the Catamounts to a 38-34 upset of No. 17 Samford on Saturday, accounting for 464 yards of total offense. Adams threw for 312 yards, counting a 59-yard touchdown among his 19 completions, for his fourth career game of 300 passing yards or more. The redshirt sophomore from St. Petersburg, Florida, also ran for a career-high 152 yards and another score on 20 rushes. His 152 yards on the ground were the most in the league on the week and good for an average of 7.6 yards per attempt. The win was Western Carolina’s first over a ranked FCS foe since 2006, snapping the Catamounts’ 27-game losing streak against such opponents.

Other nominees: Austin Herink (ETSU), P.J. Blazejowski (Furman), CJ Leggett (Mercer), Devlin Hodges (Samford), Nick Tiano (Chattanooga) and Andre Stoddard (Wofford).

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Keion Crossen, Western Carolina, Sr., DB, Garysburg, N.C.
Western Carolina defensive back Keion Crossen had eight tackles and two pass breakups in the Catamounts’ 38-34 win over No. 17 Samford on Saturday. The senior from Garysburg, North Carolina, saved his biggest play for last, breaking up Samford quarterback Devlin Hodges’ fourth-and-goal pass from the 1-yard line in the back of the end zone as time expired to preserve Western Carolina’s first win over a ranked opponent since 2006. Crossen had six solo stops and a tackle for loss among his eight tackles.

Other nominees: Reynard Ellis (Furman), Jalen Penn (Mercer), Ahmad Gooden (Samford), Lucas Webb (Chattanooga) and Jireh Wilson (Wofford).

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: JJ Jerman, ETSU, Jr., K, Seymour, Tenn.
ETSU kicker JJ Jerman booted a pair of field goals and converted both of his point after touchdown attempts in Saturday’s 26-23 overtime win over Mercer. The junior from Seymour, Tennessee, kicked a 25-yard field goal in the second quarter to put the Bucs ahead 10-0 and converted from a career-long 49 yards in the fourth quarter to halt the Bears’ 20-point scoring run. The 49-yard field goal was the fourth-longest in program history and pushed Jerman into fourth in school history with 25 made field goals. His two PATs moved him into a tie for fifth in program history with 49.

Other nominees: Jon Croft Hollingsworth (Furman), Grant Goupil (Mercer), Austin Barnard (Samford), Alphonso Stewart (Chattanooga), Will Horton (Western Carolina) and Luke Carter (Wofford).
