SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman football player Andy Schumpert has been named the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for competition held Nov. 22-28, the league office announced Wednesday.
Schumpert helped lift the Paladins past Elon in the FCS playoffs on Saturday, catching four passes for 89 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Furman was victorious 28-27. Schumpert would connect with quarterback P.J. Blazejowski early in the second quarter, tying the game at 7-7. On Furman’s next possession, the tight end hauled in a 70-yard TD to give the Paladins a 14-7 lead. Schumpert, who was named student-athlete of the week on Oct. 4, leads Furman with nine touchdown receptions on the season.
The senior from Brentwood, Tennessee, is an accounting major with a 3.77 grade point average. Schumpert is a member of the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, a three-time SoCon Academic Honor Roll selection and the recipient of the 2017 Lawrence Kessler Award for Excellence in Accounting.
With the road victory, Furman will travel to Wofford to face the Terriers in the second round of the FCS playoffs on Saturday.
