SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Aaron Templeton and Allie Buchalski have been named Southern Conference men’s and women’s runners of the week, respectively, for competition that took place Sept. 1-3, the league office announced Wednesday. Both runners won their respective races to open the 2017 season as Furman’s teams claimed their second consecutive Eye Opener Invitational titles.
Templeton, a junior from Knoxville, Tennessee, paced the Furman’s men’s team with a time of 25:04.3 as he edged out fellow Paladin Daniel Bernal by three seconds to claim first place. Furman runners took the top nine scored spots in the men’s 8k race as the men scored 15 points for the win.
Buchalski, returning from a redshirt year, won the individual title at the Eye Opener Invitational with a time of 17:26.9 on the 5K course. The Johns Creek, Georgia, native paced the Paladin women’s squad to a first-place team finish as the women tallied 19 points in the victory. Buchalski bested the second-place finisher by 10 seconds as the Furman women had nine place in the top 10.
The Paladins return to action this weekend as they host the Furman Invitational on Sept. 9 in Greenville. SoCon member Mercer will also participate in the event.
Also nominated for men’s runner of the week: Will Sandin (UNCG), John Paye (Chattanooga), Justin Adams (VMI) and Jordan Bostian (Western Carolina).
Also nominated for women’s runner of the week: Amber Opp (The Citadel), Ariana Garcia (UNCG), Emily Poole (Chattanooga), Bethany King (VMI), Kaitlyn Lingard (Western Carolina) and Hannah Steelman (Wofford).
