GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman head coach Robert Gary has been named the 2017 NCAA Division I Cross Country Southeast Region Men’s Coach of the Year, as announced Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).  Selections were voted on by member coaches from each division.

Gary, who is in his sixth season at the helm of the Paladin program, becomes the first Furman coach to win this award after leading the Paladin men to the 2017 NCAA Southeast Region Championship on Friday in Charlottesville, Va., the first region championship in the history of the Furman program.  The Paladins scored 55 points for the victory in a field of 32 teams.  Junior Aaron Templeton paced the Paladins on the 10K course with a time of 29:05.4 to finish fifth, becoming one of six Furman runners to earn a spot on the all-region team.

Gary was honored as the Southern Conference Men’s Coach of the Year for the fifth-straight time after leading the Paladins, who are currently ranked seventh nationally, to their fifth-consecutive league championship last month. Gary was also chosen the SoCon Women’s Coach of the Year for the fifth-consecutive season after leading the Furman women’s program, which is ranked 11th nationally, to its fifth-straight league title.

“I am thrilled to see Robert being recognized for the years of hard work that he and his staff have put into establishing this program,” said Furman Director of Athletics Mike Buddie.  “The vision that Robert had for this program was bold, but recent results have shown that his vision has become a reality.”
