MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – UNCG men’s golfer Jonathan Brightwell won the Rice Planters Amateur by defeating Garett Wood of Xavier in a playoff hole after finishing the four-round tournament with a 13-under-par 275 (68-68-68-71) on Saturday at the par-72 Snee Farm Country Club.
Brightwell tied for the second-lowest round score of 4-under 68 in the first three rounds to lead after every single day.
Brightwell entered the final day with a three-stroke lead over Wood, had four birdies in the round and was one of six golfers in the field of 93 to register below-par in each of the four days. He collected four birdies and an eagle in the first round, five birdies the next day and six birdies and another eagle on Friday.
The Rice Planters Amateur has been played for 46 years with the winners of the tournament combining to win seven major golf championships and 147 PGA Tour, Champions’ Tour and Nationwide Tour victories.
Brightwell is the second Spartan to win an amateur tournament over the summer, as Bryce Hendrix won the Palmetto Amateur on June 9.
