SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNC Greensboro senior Jonathan Brightwell has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for all competition from Sept. 11-17. The selection is made by the league office and is Brightwell’s second straight to open the fall campaign.
Brightwell turned in a tournament-best 16 birdies en route to an 11-under-par 205 to win the Rod Myers Invitational at the Duke Golf Course in Durham, North Carolina, over the weekend. The Charlotte, North Carolina, native opened with a 4-under 68 in Saturday’s first round and followed that with a 2-under 70 in the day’s afternoon circuit to sit in a tie for fourth after two rounds. Brightwell then fired the low round of the day Sunday, a 5-under 67, to earn the one-stroke win, the first outright title of his career and UNCG’s 31st individual title as a program. It was Brightwell’s sixth career top-five finish and second straight to open his senior season.
Brightwell helped the Spartans tie for fourth in the 13-team, 75-man field, which included eight teams that finished in the top 100 of last spring’s Golfstat rankings and four that finished in the top 25.
The weekly award is the fourth of Brightwell’s career.
UNCG returns to action Oct. 5-6 at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate, hosted by NC State at its Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Also nominated: Archie Davies (ETSU), Reynolds Lambert (Furman) and Pierre Viallaneix (Western Carolina).
