SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU’s Jack Rhea has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for all competition from Oct. 9-15. The selection is made by the league office.
Rhea earned his first collegiate title at the Bucs’ own Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Blackthorn Club in Rhea’s hometown of Jonesborough, Tennessee. The junior turned in a 15-under-par 201 over the course of the three-day tournament, tying the second-lowest score in tournament history. Rhea opened the tournament with a 5-under 67 on Friday to sit in a tie for fourth and followed that up with a career-best 9-under 63 the next day to match the tournament single-round record and jump into first. He capped his weekend with a 1-under 71 on Sunday to claim the two-stroke win, becoming the third Buc to claim the tournament title and first since 2015.
ETSU turned in a runner-up finish in a 15-team field that featured six teams in the top 50 of the Golfweek rankings. The Bucs, who finished a collective 29-under-par 835, earned their seventh top-three finish in the 22-year history of the tournament.
The weekly award is the first of Rhea’s career.
ETSU returns to action at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate in Alpharetta, Georgia, on Oct. 18-20.
Also nominated: Reynolds Lambert (Furman), Martin Plukka (Mercer), Jonathan Brightwell (UNC Greensboro), Pierre Viallaniex (Western Carolina) and Walker Simas (Wofford).
