TAMPA, Fla. – Stanton Schorr and Spencer Ball continued their impressive starts to the spring season with top-10 individual finishes to pace Mercer to a tie for fourth place as play concluded Tuesday at the USF Invitational at Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club.
Mercer jumped two spots into the fourth-place tie with a third-round 299, which was eight strokes better than its first-round of 307 on Monday. The Bears finished 57-over-par (921) for the two-day tournament.
Mercer made the largest jump of any team in the 11-team field on Tuesday, gaining two spots to earn a top-five finish. The Bears tied with FGCU, both of which were well off a top-three finish (15 strokes). The six teams Mercer placed ahead of included Cleveland State, Delaware, Murray State, George Mason, Stetson and Florida A&M.
Schorr was one of two players to shoot a field-low 69 on Tuesday, which helped him jump five spots into a three-way tie for third place. The junior finished 3-over-par (219) for the tournament. Meanwhile, Ball continued his steady play with a sixth-place finish at 5-over-par. He was +2 Tuesday.
All seven Mercer golfers – including individual players Nolan Miller and Tyler Copp – gained spots individually in Tuesday’s final round. Schorr and Ball also both placed ahead of nationally ranked (No. 42) Cristian DiMarco of USF.
Mercer will return to the Peach State and co-host the Linger Longer Invitational with Kennesaw State on March 18-20 at Reynolds Lake Oconee in Greensboro, Georgia.
