INDIANAPOLIS – The UNCG men’s golf team was selected to the Stockton, California, Regional as the No. 11 seed for the 2018 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship, the NCAA announced on Wednesday. The Spartans will compete with 12 other teams in the region at The Reserve at Spanos Park from May 14-16.
Joining UNCG in the region is No. 1 seed LSU, No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Stanford, No. 4 USC, No. 5 Oregon, No. 6 TCU, No. 7 Colorado, No. 8 Kansas, No. 9 Kennesaw State, No. 10 Iowa State, No. 12 UC Irvine and No. 13 North Dakota State. Pairings and tee times for the first round of the regional will be announced at a later time. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstatresults.com.
The five other regions are Raleigh, North Carolina (Lonnie Poole Golf Course); Bryan, Texas (Traditions Club, Bryan Texas); Columbus, Ohio (Scarlet Course/OSU Golf Course); Kissimmee, Florida (Reunion Resort, Kissimmee); and Norman, Oklahoma (Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club). Eighty-one teams and 45 individuals will compete in the six regional sites (13 teams and 10 individuals at three regionals and 14 teams and five individuals at three regionals). Thirty teams and six individuals (five teams and the top individual in each region) will advance from regional sites to the national championships to be played May 25-30 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
UNCG clinched the automatic bid for the NCAA regionals by winning its first-ever Southern Conference Championship by five strokes with a team-score of 18-over-par 882 (297-285-300) in windy and rainy conditions last Tuesday at the par-72, 7,118-yard Pinehurst No. 9. Freshman Nick Lyerly also became the second Spartan to win the SoCon individual championship, turning in a 4-under 212 (73-70-69) for the only sub-par score in the field. Lyerly also won the SoCon Freshman of the Year Award and was named to the all-conference team.
Senior Josh Stockwell finished in a tie for fourth place at 3-over 219 (74-69-76) and was named to the all-conference team. Joining him and Lyerly on the All-SoCon team was junior Bryce Hendrix. Hendrix tied for 11th place at 7-over 223 (72-71-80). Sophomore Jonathan Brightwell tied for 18th place at 12-over 228 (78-75-75), and sophomore Grant Powell came in 34th place at 26-over 242 (83-76-83).
