SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford’s Ryan Marter has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for all competition from April 10-16. The selection is made by the league office and is the final one of the season.
Marter tied for third at the Southern Intercollegiate in Athens, Georgia, on Monday, firing a 2-under-par 142 for the two-round, one-day event. After opening with a 1-over 73 in gusty conditions, the sophomore from Columbia, South Carolina, rebounded with a 3-under 69 in the afternoon round to complete his first collegiate top-10 finish. Marter collected three birdies in the first round and four in the second, adding an eagle on the par-5 10th hole. He was one of just eight golfers in the 85-man field to finish under par and finished five shots clear of No. 11 Trent Phillips and No. 45 Spencer Ralston, both of tournament-host Georgia.
Marter helped the Terriers to a season-best second-place finish in the 17-team field. Wofford was runner-up to No. 17 South Carolina and beat No. 14 Georgia by three strokes.
The Terriers return to action along with the league’s seven other programs at the SoCon Men’s Golf Championship at Pinehurst No. 9 in Pinehurst, North Carolina, on April 21-23. UNCG is the defending league champion, while Spartan sophomore Nick Lyerly is the defending individual medalist.
Also nominated: Oliver Simonsen (Chattanooga) and Tumi Kúld (Western Carolina).
