SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Citadel men’s tennis player Willem van Zyl has been named the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for competition held Jan. 31-Feb. 6, the league office announced Wednesday.
A native of Cape Town, South Africa, van Zyl swept through the competition without dropping a set in No. 1 singles. In his first match of the weekend, van Zyl won 6-0, 6-0 against Benedict College’s Quentin Eloise. The sophomore won his second match 6-4, 6-0 over Coker’s Mark Watt before defeating Erskine’s Steven Zahui 6-3, 6-3. van Zyl also went 2-1 in No. 1 doubles action over the weekend.
Majoring in business administration, van Zyl holds a 3.74 grade point average.
