SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU’s Frazier Rengifo has been named the Southern Conference men’s tennis player of the week for all matches played Jan. 5 through Feb. 4, the conference announced Tuesday. Rengifo is 5-0 in singles play and 3-1 in doubles action. As a team, ETSU is 3-2 on the season with 4-3 losses at Iowa and Old Dominion.
In singles play, the sophomore from Cali, Colombia, started the season with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 over Appalachian State’s Milo Bargeron at No. 1. Rengifo played the next four matches at No. 2 and remained perfect with wins over Iowa, Butler, VCU and Old Dominion. Rengifo, the only Buc perfect in singles play, has fought back to win three matches after falling behind in the first set. His most recent win (6-2, 1-6, 6-4) came against Old Dominion’s Francois Musitelli, who was ranked No. 74 nationally.
In doubles action, Rengifo began the year at No. 3 and picked up a 6-3 win over Appalachian State with teammate Yusuf Khamis. The duo played the next four matches at No. 2 and earned wins over Butler and Old Dominion, losing only to the pair from Iowa. Their match against VCU went unfinished.
ETSU returns to the court on Feb. 15 at Arizona.
