SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU’s Sergi Fontcuberta has been named the Southern Conference men’s tennis player of the week for all matches played March 5-11, the conference announced Tuesday. Fontcuberta has won six straight matches after going 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles on the week.
In singles action, the native of Barcelona, Spain, downed Georgia State’s Giles Hussey 7-6(4), 6-3 at flight No. 2 and clinched the 4-0 victory for the Bucs. The following day, the senior earned a win in the top spot, besting Ronit Bisht of Southern Miss 6-2, 6-4 to secure the win for ETSU for the second straight contest.
In doubles play, Fontcuberta and his partner, David Gonzalez, won their match against Georgia State 7-6 at No. 3 to clinch the point for ETSU. Against Southern Miss, the duo earned a 6-1 win to keep their win streak alive.
Fontcuberta and the Bucs are next in action at Middle Tennessee on March 15.
