SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford junior Justin Ghavami has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played April 10-16. The Montreal, Canada, native was a perfect 4-0 in all competition last week as the Bulldogs won a pair of conference matches, topping Chattanooga (4-3) and The Citadel (7-0).
Ghavami picked up both wins at No. 1 singles in straight sets. He defeated Lucas Plesky (6-4, 6-1) and came away with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over The Citadel’s Michael Anzalone.
With teammate Jake Fuandez at No. 1 doubles, Ghavami posted consecutive wins last week as the duo earned a 6-2 decision over UTC’s Plesky and Austin Boaz before taking a 6-1 win over The Citadel’s Anzalone and Willem van Zyl. Ghavami and Faundez are now 2-2 at No. 1 doubles after being paired together earlier this month.
Samford (7-11, 3-4 SoCon) is the No. 6 seed in this week’s Southern Conference men’s tennis tournament. The Bulldogs will take on No. 3 Mercer (20-5, 5-2 SoCon) in the quarterfinals Friday afternoon.
Other top performers in the Southern Conference included ETSU’s Miguel Este, Furman’s Adam Steryous, Mercer’s Olivier Stuart, UNCG’s Connor Thompson, and Wofford’s Julian Chousa.
