SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer’s Sam Philp has been named the Southern Conference men’s tennis player of the week for all matches played Feb. 27 to Mar. 5, the conference announced Tuesday. This is the second weekly award of the season for Philp.
Philp went 2-0 at the No. 1 singles spot, defeating Georgia’s Wayne Montgomery 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 and earning Mercer’s lone point in the match. Montgomery came into the match ranked No. 11 in the country. The senior’s second singles win came against Alijaz Kaplja of Jacksonville State, winning 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles action, the Versailles, France, native paired with Olivier Stuart to best the No.12 ranked duo of Robert Loeb and Jan Zielinksi of No. 11 Georgia, 7-5. Philp and Stuart then defeated Kaplja and Joaquin Vallejo in the No. 1 spot, 7-6 (1).
Mercer is back in action on Mar. 10 against Stetson at 11 a.m.
