DORAL, Fla. – ETSU men’s tennis player Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) will be representing Team Venezuela in the 2019 Davis Cup. The event will begin on Saturday, Sept. 14 with Venezuela taking on Ecuador in Doral, Fla.
“We’re very happy for Juan,” stated Men’s Tennis Head Coach Martin Stiegwardt. “To play in the Davis cup is one of the most exciting and prestigious accomplishments in tennis. He also earned his spot by winning the qualifier which makes it that much sweeter. He will actually be competing against Ecuador (my country), but we obviously wish him the best and I know he will represent Venezuela in a great way. This will be an experience he will never forget.”
The Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men's tennis and is run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is contested annually between teams from competing countries in a knock-out format. It is described by the organizers as the "World Cup of Tennis", and the winners are referred to as the World Champion team. The competition began in 1900 as a challenge between Great Britain and the United States. By 2016, 135 nations entered teams into the competition, with Croatia entering as the reigning champion after defeating France in 2018.
