Davidson 7, South Carolina State 0

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The freshman duo of Chris Mark and Joe Schafer remained perfect in their first season, picking up a pair of singles wins to lead Davidson to a 7-0 sweep of visiting South Carolina State to close out the month of January on Sunday afternoon at the Knobloch Tennis Center.

The two first-year players helped the Wildcats finish January on a three-match win streak and improve to 3-1overall.

Schafer, in his first match at No. 1 singles, scored a 7-5, 6-4 triumph over Radek Pivonka to run his singles mark to 3-0 on the season. He also teamed up with senior Eric Noble to help the 'Cats sweep the doubles matches, earning a tie-breaker win, 9-8, at the No. 1 position. The duo are 2-1 on the season in doubles.

Mark ran his singles record to a team-best 4-0 with an impressive 6-2, 6-2 sweep of Alexander Malko at No. 3. All four of his wins this year have come in straight sets.

The freshman also picked up his third doubles win with Sam Burns, an 8-4 decision at No. 3.

Burns, seeing his first action in a spring singles match since the 2008 season, recorded a 6-2, 7-5 win over David Grund at No. 5. The senior was took a year off last season.

Rounding out the singles points were Walker Lyons, Calum Gee and Kevin Moore. Both Lyons and Gee needed an extra set to score their wins, while Moore registered his first collegiate win in a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Radek Langer at No. 6.

Prior to their singles wins, Lyons and Gee remained undefeated as a doubles team, picking up an 8-5 victory at No. 2 to run their record to 3-0.

Davidson caps off its four-match homestand with a mid-week match against Gardner-Webb, Feb. 3, at 4 p.m.

Penn State 6, Furman 1

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Penn State, ranked 55th nationally, handed #59 Furman a 6-1 loss Sunday in men's tennis action in the final day of the  ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Gainesville, Fla. 

Paladin junior Sawyer Duncan recorded a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win over Ryan Gormley at number one singles, while Furman's number three doubles team of junior Andrei Chvetsov and senior Jordan Walters picked up a 9-7 win over Taylor Cohen and Guillaume St-Maurice.

Freshman Carl Lundberg pushed St. Maurice to a tie breaker at number four singles, with St. Maurice taking the first set 6-4 and Lundberg winning the second set 7-6.  St. Maurice posted a 10-6 victory in the tie-breaker to seal the match.

Paladins freshman Andrew Mellow dropped a close 6-4, 7-6 match to Cohen at number six singles, and teamed up with Duncan for a 9-8 loss to Ryan Gormley and Warren Hardie in the number two doubles spot.

The Paladins (0-2) will play Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla., Friday at 3 p.m.

William & Mary 6, Elon 1

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - All six singles matches were hotly contested with four matches needing three sets to determine a winner, but in the end it was the William & Mary Tribe that outlasted the No. 72 Elon men's tennis team, 6-1, on Sunday morning at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The marathon match lasted four hours and 40 minutes as the Phoenix fell to 0-3 on the season. The Tribe improved to 6-4 overall.
 
William & Mary took the doubles point with wins at the bottom two doubles positions. Elon's Philip Nemec and Chase Helpingstine won their first dual match of the year at the top spot, defeating Anton Andersson and Keziel Juneau, 8-5.
 
The Tribe pushed its lead to 2-0 after No. 122 Juneau earned a come-from-behind 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Nemec at number one singles. After falling in the first set, Elon rookie Tommy Darling took set two to a tiebreaker before falling 6-4, 7-6 (5) to Adrian Vodislav at number six. William & Mary clinched the match when Andersson downed Alberto Rojas in the tightest straight-set match of the day, 7-5, 7-6 (8).
 
Helpingstine put Elon on the board with his second consecutive victory of the season, defeating Richard Wardell, 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-3 at the three spot. Elon's Eric Turner nearly picked up a victory after winning the opening set 6-3, but Sebastien Vidal managed to win the tiebreaker in the second set to force a deciding third set. Vidal pulled out the 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 victory.
 
At number five, Phoenix freshman Carlos Arboleda lost the opening set to Ilja Orre in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (2), before taking the second, 6-3. Orre finally broke Arboleda in the 11th game and then served out the match, 7-5, to take the three-set victory.
 
Elon will play its fourth consecutive road match when it travels to UNC Wilmington to battle the Seahawks on Saturday, February 6 at 1 p.m.
